A Journey from Brunei to Sarawak

Thirty years ago, Hedley, with his wife Mary and daughter Katie, visited the Niah Caves in Sarawak, East Malaysia. They travelled by car, ferry and boat.

They set off from Bandar Seri Begawan, the capital of Brunei and drove to the border with Sarawak. They crossed two large rivers by ferry, stopped in Miri for lunch and then continued to Niah,a small river township. Then they hired a small boat and sailed upriver to a government rest house, where they spent the night. They ate with the small group of scientists who lived in the rest house and shared the cold drinks they had brought with them in a cool box. It was a remote spot, deep in the jungle. They slept in bunk beds with no air-conditioning .It was a novel experience.

The next morning, they walked along a jungle path for half an hour until they reached the Niah caves. Inside the caves, which were very high, they saw men who climbed up tall bamboo poles. The men wore lights on their hats because it was so dark. At the top of the poles they scraped off birds’ nests from the roof of the caves. The nests were collected by their mates on the cave floor and packed into sacks. These nests were later sold and made into bird’s nest soup, a Chinese delicacy.

That afternoon, they said goodbye to their new-found friends in the rest house and set off on the long drive home. It was quite an adventure and one they would never forget.

The National Day

This weekend I celebrated National Day in Abu Dhabi. I was driving along the Corniche when I was stopped by a policeman in an unmarked car.

He was not wearing uniform but was dressed in a normal white dishdasha. He started to shout at me and my friends. I asked him what the problem was and suddenly he pointed at the back seat. There was a box of foam spray, but I was not using anything that is illegal. The policeman said that the box was not legal. He said to get of the car in a high voice and told his partner to check the car. I got out of the car but I could not believe what happened. The policeman caught my hand and pushed me to his car. He took out everything from the car and threw them in the street. He told me to drive my car and leave the place. I drove away but I was very angry about what happened to me.

I learned from this story that I must read the law. I have to complain about what happened to me. The policemen’s job is to protect the people, not to fight them.

Orange juice

Nowadays orange juice is a very famous drink in the world. In the morning a lot of people have breakfast and drink orange juice. I will list the process of making orange juice.

First the fruit is unloaded from trucks and graded. Then the fruit is washed and sized. Then the fruit is sent to the juice extractor but the wasted peel is sent as animal feed. Second the juice is moved to the evaporator and concentrated. After that it is refrigerated in storage and the juice is sent to the canning machine. Third, the juice is moved and shipped to Dubai. In addion water is added to the concentrate juice and filled in large bottles.
As we see it is easy to write the steps but it is hard to do it by yourself .The juice is sent a long distance and you can have it fresh.

Reflection 2

Do you know that I learn from Mr. Hedley a lot. The first thing is that compare and contrast must be 200 words. The second thing is that the essay must have 4 paragraphs ; as we know introduction is the first paragraph. Then the body but don’t forget that the body has 2 parts so the first is the similarities and the second is the differences. The final thing is the conclusion but it must have your ideas and what you prefer.

Compare and contrast between a small town and a big city

Everywhere in all countries there are small towns and big cities. People like big cities so they can find all facilities there .There are also people who like small towns.I am going to write about the similarities and differences between a small town and a big city.

There are a few similarities and differences between a small town and a big city. The first similarity is that both of them have facilities such as water and electricity so living there is the same .The second similarity is that roads and streets  are both there so it’s easy to reach home .The third similarity is that both have a population in them so you can live a normal life in them . Another similarity is that both have schools and hospitals so if you want to study or have treatment you can do so in both of them.

Although there are similarities there are also several differences .The first difference is that a big city has big buildings, not as a small town so the big city can take more population. The second difference is that a big city has more traffic than a small town. The third difference is that a small town is quieter than the big city so people can sleep well.

As we see, there are similarities and also differences. I prefer a small town to a big city so I can relax and avoid traffic.

UAE in the past and nowadays

People like to know about any country, its history and what it is now. A lot of change has happened in the UAE from the past until nowadays. I am going to write about the similarities and differences between the UAE 40 years ago and now.

There are a few similarities and differences between them. The first similarity is that people use camels for racing so they can have fun and they challenge between them. Another point is that the royal family is Al Nahyan because people like them. Also the main language that they use is Arabic, the same as the past .The final similarity is that the religion is the same, Islam.

Although there are similarities, there are also several differences .The first difference is the population has increased. Another difference is that the hospitals in the past were not as many as now. A further dissimilarity is that there are more buildings everywhere. Also there is a final difference which is the education. In the past they studied the Koran, writing and reading only. Now there are universities and schools everywhere in the UAE.

As we know the UAE has been changed in a short time from 0 to 180 degrees. There are many facilities that any person needs. I prefer the UAE now because everything is available to have a good life.

Reflection 1

Mr. Hedley said that a procedure essay must be three paragraphs. The first step is the introduction that contains 25-30 words. The main paragraph has 100 words but don’t forget imperatives and link words. The conclusion should be very short and have the idea how to do the procedure. Finally, I learn from my teacher how to write procedure so I wrote two essays.

First check the fresh milk to see if the quality and fat content are good so you can use the milk. Second leave the milk to cool in the refrigerator so you can do the next step. Then start to separate the cream. Third churn the cream and drain the butter milk slowly from the butter. Next place the butter in a jar but it must not be a big jar. After that wash the butter with cold water so it helps you to remove the remaining buttermilk .In addition a small amount of salt will give good flavour. Finally cut and wrap the butter but don’t forget to store the butter in a fridge.
